Sculpture Final Portfolio

Final

- What was your favorite material that you used this year? Why do you like working with it?

My favorite material this year was clay. I used clay for at least half of my projects throughout this class.  I find clay fun and easy to work with because the opportunities are endless!  You can make it into almost any shape and size.  I made a lot of different things out of clay: a vessel, paint splatters, a relief piece, and more.  Clay is the best because its holds shape until you're ready to fire it.  After it's fired, you then have more options because clay can be either painted, glazed, or left alone.  If you choose to paint the clay you can choose any color! If you can't find the color you want, you can mix colors.  The biggest plus about paint on clay is you can make intricate designs, whereas with glaze, the colors would melt together.  However, when you use glaze, your piece has a lovely shine and smoothness.  With the never-ending possibilities of clay, it's the obvious choice for me.

- Regardless of whether a project was successful or not, describe the one where you learned, grew, or developed the most from?  Please explain.

When I think of the project I grew the most from, only one project comes to mind... the vessel.  The vessel project was one of the first projects we did in the sculpture class.  I was excited when I found my inspiration on pinterest.  I wanted to do something that I could place a candle under and would illuminate the wall through holes in the piece.  I came up with the globe-like dome idea and started right away.  I molded the clay around a bowl.  The problem was the clay stuck to the bowl and wouldn't come off.  After about 2 1/2 days of aggravation I redid the clay on another bowl but with newspaper underneath to prevent sticking.  I attached the two pieces, carved out the holes and soon after was at the glazing stage.  After it was all done, I looked at it and I knew this was the piece I had learned a lot from.  I grew to never make those same mistakes and really enjoy clay.

- What did you find most difficult about this class? This could be anything from gathering materials, to generating projects ideas, to applying a particular technique. What could be done to resolve this issue in the future?

Sculpture was honestly my favorite class of all high school so far.  My teacher, Ms. Sudkamp, rocks, and this is the class where I feel like I can do anything.  Sculpture really allows everyone to be extremely creative.  However, for me, coming up with ideas isn't always the easiest thing to do.  With each project you complete, you want to improve.  So the planning process tends to get longer and longer.  I definitely think that in the future we should continue to use pinterest for inspiration.  Also, the next time around, we should share our ideas with other people at our table and give each other suggestions.  With our combined ideas, the art will be even more amazing (Picture below is an idea created by my partner Cara and I.  Showing that 2 heads are better than one).  Other than that, sculpture really is the class I recommend most for anyone who wants to be creative, not be limited, and create whatever they want, using their true potential.
